SEBORRHEIC SKIN

Seborrhea or seborrheic dermatitis (dermatitis seborrhoica) is a chronic skin condition that can appear at any age, from infancy to adulthood. According to experts, it is caused by a genetic predisposition, along with a combination of factors such as stress, fatigue, excess sebum production, hormonal imbalances, and the overgrowth of a naturally occurring skin fungus (Malassezia).
It affects up to 5% of the population and occurs more frequently in men.

The factors responsible for acne are:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Stress and fatigue
  • Excess sebum production
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Overgrowth of a naturally occurring skin fungus (Malassezia)

How it manifests:
Lesions typically appear on the face in seborrheic zones—above the eyebrows, between the brows, on the sides of the nose, and very often on the scalp. In some cases, lesions may also appear on the chest and, more rarely, in other skin fold areas such as the underarms. Symptoms include:

  • Oily flakes or scales
  • Redness on the skin and scalp
  • Flaking
  • Intense itching

Treatment

A combination of keratolytic and/or sebum-regulating skincare products is usually recommended, along with topical treatments that have anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties.

Expert advice

  • Eat healthy. Seborrhea symptoms can improve by eliminating sweets, fatty foods, and animal fats from your diet.
  • Maintain a regular personal hygiene and skincare routine, using products specifically designed for seborrhea.
  • Wear clothing made from natural, breathable materials, such as bamboo, cotton, or hemp.
  • Limit stress, as it can worsen seborrhea symptoms, get enough sleep and relax.
